every part of the world, but there are about 27 million people still held in slavery, that is actually more than when slavery was an open acceptable form in societies. (I should say it was acceptable as long as you were not the slave) Today, human slavery is much more covert and it is a billion dollar business.

There is different types of slavery: forced labor, commercial sexual exploitation of children, trafficking which involves transport and/or trade of humans, usually women or children, for economic gain. Often migrant women and girls are tricked and forced into domestic work and prostitution.

Today people are still bought and sold as commodities. They are often abducted from their homes, inherited or given as gifts. This is common in West Africa, particularly Mauritania.

<h6 class="zemanta-related-title" They have gone to the U.N. and talked to Senators. Knowing that the lack of education leads to the ignorance that allows young people to get caught in human slavery, they begged type='text'>Human Trafficking

Today, I was supposed to go to Lancaster with a friend. When we go, we like to spend time outdoors. Unfortunately, today was the first day of the autumn to experience snow, as well as lots of rain. So, we cancelled. I took this opportunity to go to a workshop on Human Trafficking. It was hard to listen to. However, as I listened, I realized as difficult as it was, it was important to educate the world about this horror. As long as it is kept in the dark, unscrupulous men and women can continue to make their billions off the disadvantaged in this world.

I was so inspired by a group of young high school girls from Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth, N.J. The Benedictine Academy is a small girls' high school comprised of mostly poor young ladies. They have single handedly taken on the human trafficking problem.

One of the many things I learned from these young ladies is that every 10 minutes, a woman or child is trafficked in the United States for forced labor. They have more on their website www.benedictineacad.org under campus ministry/human trafficking.

Please write to your congresspersons for stricter laws. The Senate bill (S596) includes a number of provisions that strengthen global and domestic anti-trafficking programs and services. The House bill (HR 2830) also includes important anti-trafficking measures.
Are Courts Fair To Abused Women?

Recently I went to court for a custody hearing. The woman I saw there was typical of clients that I see that are abused, some physical, some psychological. These women have been intimidated for years. It takes a lot of courage and planning for them to leave the man and step out on their own, especially when children are involved.

I was shocked to see what seemed to me a grossly unfair hearing. The man was represented by a lawyer, and the woman had no one. The lawyer had studied law for years; he knew the legal system inside and out. He was taking notes. He objected when he knew that something was legally amiss. Each parent had a chance to ask the witnesses questions, but she did not know what questions would be legally acceptable, whereas the experienced lawyer knew exactly what to focus on. She did not know to object. The lawyer knew exactly when to object. As an outsider to the legal system, this struck me as grossly unfair.

Questions came to my mind? Where was the money coming from to pay for the lawyer? Could it have been money better spent on the children? Did the judge know beforehand that one would have a lawyer and the other not? Or did the man lie about getting a lawyer? Was it a surprise to the woman and the judge when the man showed up with a lawyer? Should this thing be permitted?

They are just questions that come to my mind. I do not know the outcome of the decision as I was unable to stay. I can only hope the judge took into consideration that this woman was unable to be on the same legal par as the husband's lawyer.
Vacation

I arrived in Florida on July 2 at night and joined a party at my niece's house. On July 4, we had about 16 people for a picnic supper, including my niece and her family from Georgia. On July 6 at night My borther-in-law, , and I went to a Phillies game here in Florida. I think there were more Phillies fans than Marlin fans there. The players must have experienced it as a home game. They won 14-2. The winning pitcher was Cole Hamels. It was loads of fun. We had the best seats. They were not the most expensive but they were the best. We were on the fourth row just a little north of 3rd base. We could see balls and strikes real well. We had a good view of the infield and outfield, as well as the Phillies bullpen. We were surrounded by other Phillies fans. It was a great night!
The Dream Act

I would like to tell the story of one woman who would be eligible for Dream Act. Some identifying factors have been changed to protect the innocent.

I know a woman who came to the United States when she was 14 years old. She had no say in the matter. Unlike our own adolescents, those who come from Central and South America, they rarely question their parents' decisions. She had to learn a new language and culture, but she was so intelligent and applied herself so diligently that she won a full scholarship to a college which she was unable to take advantage of because of her immigration status. She pledged allegiance to the flag, sang the star spangled banner and knew American history as well as any American-born person. In some cases, even better.

She made a very poor decision in selecting a mate. She had 4 children with him, before she divorced him. Now, unable to work because of her immigration status, she was put in a position where she had to support her children as a single mother, without legal documents. In today's world, that is almost impossible. Unable to get a legal license to drive, she, who was ordinarily a law-abiding person, felt she had no choice, but to drive without a license. Single mothers understand this. She has to take her children to many places, including picking them up from school. She has had to pay much money to pay court fines for driving without a license. This is money she could have better used to buy much needed food and clothes for her children.

Our current laws are really unfair to her and millions of others who were brought over to this country as minors. I strongly support the Dream Act, and hope you do, too.
<img width='1' height='1' project for school, asked me about my thoughts on immigration.

One of the things that I feel very strongly about is the Dream Act. I would go even further than the current Dream Act. If anyone came to this country younger than 18 years old and is a high school graduate, I would give them a path to citizenship. I don't believe in fines as many of these people are dirt poor, yet they are contributing members of society, and certainly they are not responsible for what their parents did. Many grew up thinking the U.S. was their country. They pledged allegiance to the flag, sang the Star Spangled banner, studied American history and many did not know they were not citizens until they tried to function in the adult world. I don't even like the no criminal record requirement, because many of these people are accused unjustly, taken advantage of because they do not have the money to prove themselves innocent. Some of these children turned adults get involved in drugs and gangs because they feel so hopeless about supporting themselves. This does society no good.

Also, if their children are U.S. citizens, I do not believe they should be forced to be raised in another country because their parents are not. I think parents should be given permission to live in this country if their children are U.S. citizens, as long as they have not abused children. That is the only crime, if it is proven, that I would not tolerate.

Some people think immigrants come just to make their children citizens. I have never come across such a person. They come because they feel desperate in their own countries and are starving. They come here to survive and many times with the intention of returning to their homeland. The problem is when the children are born here, the children do not want to leave.

These are the two incidences that I feel very strongly about because the family is the foundation of society and to tear families apart does not help the country.

If any of the immigrants are career criminals, I would not let them stay in the country.

Immigrant Hispanics have the same problems everybody else does plus some problems that are unique to them because they do not have legal status, and because they are living far away from their support systems.

Many times young males, who were born elsewhere, but were raised in the United States, will turn to drugs and gangs because they see no hope for the future. Single mothers who came over as minors have to break the law to survive; i.e. driving without a license, insurance fraud because they are seriously ill and cannot get insurance, lying to get housing, using false social security cards, etc. Some people have been deported simply because they were Hispanics and were not carrying their legal documents on them leaving women and children to fend for themselves when they could barely speak the language. These women and children are usually suffering from depression or possibly post-trauma if they were present when ICE took their father away. (ICE has a tendency not to be gentle.) Can you imagine seeing your father who you love and respect, being abused by ICE.

My friend asked me if I had the resources how could my non-profit make the necessary changes to help these people. I find that counseling itself helps these people cope with their many problems. They really can feel empowered especially when they learn there are resources for them and that they have the power within themselves to change things, i.e., a young teenager was going to join a gang because of discrimination and felt he needed the protection of the gang. He learned there were ways that he could volunteer and help to change things through constructive activities; for example, marches, writing to congressmen, letter-writing campaigns. He also became aware of organizations that already exist that he could join and add his clout to.

These are just some rambling thoughts on this Memorial Day to honor our soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice. I am sure we are all aware that we are a nation of immigrants. Hopefully, the Dream Act will be passed soon to help those adults who were brought here as minors.

<div class="zemanta-pixie" sizcache="5287" sizset="1" style="height: 15px; I get a little disconcerted when I see so much attention put on priest abusers. That is only a small fraction of a much bigger problem. The child is hurt on so many levels. The majority of abusers in my experience are step-fathers, some grandparents, some uncles, some older brothers, boy scout leaders, bus drivers. One time in my career of 12 years as a counselor, one person told me they were abused by a priest. No matter who does it, it is a despicable evil act. In fact, there are no words in the English language that can adequately describe the horror it is for the abused child. The ones I find most heart-rending are when a step-father abuses a child, and the mother abandons the child so she can be with the step-father. I disagree with those who who say the priests should be held to a higher standard. That is to ignore the problem. The problem is that millions of children are being abused daily whether it is through human trafficking or relatives or trusted friends of the family who are the abusers. We need to hold everyone to the same high standard. To do otherwise, is to ignore the millions of children being abused daily.

I would like to invite and challenge newspapers and media across the country to really look into the abuse of children and see what we as a people can do to stop it. To focus on one group of abusers, while ignoring the rest, does little to solve this horrendous evil.

Reflections on the Ripple Effect or Quantam Physics

Have you seen the movie "The King's Speech?" I have not, but I have read reviews and heard others talk about it. To me the story of the Duke of York, Albert, shows the power of how all our positive actions can benefit so many people by the ripple effect. Some people call it Quantam physics.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=corazonalimen&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0049OSQ18&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">A brief review of history for those who may not know it. Albert was second in line for the throne of England. His older brother, who would have assumed the throne, fell in love with an American divorcee, and was therefore disqualified from becoming the King of England. His brother was next in line. The problem was, his brother stuttered. The Duke's loyal wife, Elizabeth, encouraged him to to visit the eccentric elocutionist Lionel Logue. When World War II broke out, the people needed a morale booster from their tongue-tied King, and they got it. What would have happened had Elizabeth not encouraged him to see the elocutionist? What would have happened if Lionel Logue showed deference to the King, instead of challenging him? What would have happened to the people of England if they did not have their King who was able to encourage them, through verbal communication? We can see how one positive action led to another and led to another with a tremendous impact on a nation.

The same is true of negative actions. We have only to look at the priest scandal in the Catholic Church. Some who were abused as children became priests, and they, in turn, started abusing other children. It is common for the abused to become abusers. Abusers look for easy targets. Priests in the 50's & 60's were so well respected, parents frequently did not believe their children if they told them "Father" did something horribly wrong to them. Words cannot describe the terrible suffering these innocent victims endured from the trusted abusive priests and the well-intentioned parents who possibly did not believe them. The sexual abuse is one type of suffering. The disbelief of the parents, who the children thought would protect them was a whole other type of pain.

Those children grew up and some of them started suing the church. Now Catholic dioceses are going bankrupt and all the good they were able to do before is now paralyzed. An example of this is the diocese of Wilmington where I work. The Bishop is proposing to liquify the money from the Foundation started by Raskob to pay for all the lawsuits. Here are just some of the ministries that will be effected by that: Ministry of Caring who has women, men's, and family shelters, daycare for the poor, addiction services for adolescents, job placement center, a dining room to feed the homeless, and many others. Catholic Charities who provides much needed social services will also be effected. St. Paul's School, which serves poor children, mainly Hispanics and blacks, will also suffer. These are just a few of the services and people who will suffer because of the lawsuits. These innocent poor people were not even born when the abuse by some priests took place. Now thousands of innocent people are being deprived of much needed services, when they had nothing to do with the original abuse.

The point of my reflection is this: I do not believe any of our actions, whether positive or negative, just effect ourselves. They have the potential to effect a nation as with Albert or thousands of innocent poor people as we see today as a result of the abuse scandal.

Franciscan Volunteers

Last night, four Franciscan volunteers visited our motherhouse. The Franciscan Volunteer program consists of volunteers who give one to two years of their lives to help out at a certain missions. St. Paul's in Wilmington has 4 volunteers this year.

They came for supper last night. They first ate supper with us. One is extremely outgoing and was greeting all the Sisters at the different tables. We have quite a few round tables in the dining room that seat 6 people. He went around to all of them and talked to everyone. Another one hopped from one table to another. They seemed very much at home.

After supper the tour began. Sister Rose Immaculate, a prize-winning photographer showed them the collection of her pictures that line the second hall corridor. They were enthralled by the beauty of the collection. Then, she gave them each a book.

From there, we went to the fifth floor, where you can see three different States. One view shows the Philadelphia skyline; another, the bridges going into New Jersey and the western shore of New Jersey, and the third view allows you to see the edge of Wilmington, Delaware.

From there, I showed them the first floor. The life-size statue of St. Francis greets visitors at the entrance. Then, the history of our congregation is depicted along the walls in script and pictures. From there, we went into the heritage room, where there were memorabilia of our Sisters in the early days of our community, along with somethings of St. John Neumann who was instrumental in founding our community.

Then, I took them into our Spiritual Center. One of the volunteers, Chris, had helped with a retreat there some time ago. It brought back memories. From there, Chris wanted to see the main chapel. The volunteers were enthralled with the chapel. Chris imagined he was talking to the Sisters at the pulpit.

The spirit of those young volunteers were with me this morning as I walked in the hallway down to chapel for early morning Mass. I could see each one in my mind's eye as I walked to chapel. I know the priest was talking to us, but I could see Chris there giving us a reflection. Their spirits now live in our hallowed halls.

Spring Training

It is a quiet peaceful winter day. This year, we do not have the deep snow that we had last year, but we have had frequent, although not deep snow storms, so we constantly live in the white all winter.

I may be a Religious Sister, but I love baseball and the Phillies will be starting spring training next month. I am looking forward to this season with four star starting pitchers, my only concern is will we have enough hitting. Time will tell.

Christmas season

The Christmas season officially ends today. Where did it go? I love this time of year and am sorry to see it end. On Christmas eve, I made my routine rounds. First, I visited my parents and grandparents at St. Dominic Cemetary. From there, I visited my nephew and his family. My nephew has three boys and they are truly a beautiful family. After a short visit with them, I went to visit my brother and his wife. I had dinner with them. My sister-in-law made a superb meal. At 7:00 p.m. in the evening, we went to my oldest niece's house. She always has a big celebration on Christmas eve, and I get to see that side of the family. I stayed over at my brother and sister-in-law's house when the party was over. The next morning, we all went out for breakfast. After a short visit in the morning, I returned to the convent to join the Sisters on the big meal of the day. I do enjoy the visiting and seeing parts of my family because I love them dearly. At the same time, it is always good to be back in the quiet of the convent, where there is more time to reflect and pray.

Christmas stories

I went to a spiritual workshop about reminiscing personal Christmas stories. Then, we connected our own stories with a reflection of the Incarnation, God among us.

A Christmas story I remember is gathering around my mother who played the piano. My mother was an excellent pianist and singer. Of all her six children, not too many of us had her talent for music. We gathered around her on Christmas day, as she played the piano and we would sing Christmas carols (all off key, of course.) What was so nice about that was we were together sharing the joy of Christmas in the intimacy of our home. We felt vey close to one another with all our idiosyncrasies, with our lack of musical talent, (and good points, too.)

This reflected Incarnation because it reflected the intimacy of the Holy Family rejoicing at the birth of the God-Child in the intimacy of their family. Just the way we were off-key, the world seemed to be off-key in those days in not recognizing the magnificent event that was taking place in their time and place. I wonder where God is incarnate with us today in our own off-key world.

Cover Girl

This month I appeared on the cover of The Good News. The Good News has won a number of awards. It is the magazine put out by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia.

The story was about part of my ministry. I do both mental health and chemical dependency counseling. That part of my ministry I cannot talk about it, because it is totally confidential. However, the parenting classes are not confidential. The article focuses on the parenting classes. These are not ordinary parenting classes; they are for parents who have difficult children to raise. These classes have helped many parents. Our team are the only ones of them that do them in Spanish. We also do them in English.

Sara
Recently, I introduced you to Simona, who recently entered into discernment about becoming a Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Now, I would like to introduce Sara. Sara works at Neumann University as a campus minister. She has her own blog. I lifted this quote off her blog to give you an idea of who she is.

Living in a convent is much like living in a family . . . you have your responsibilities within the household: your nights to cook dinner, your chores, your days to lead prayers, etc. But along with those responsibilities also comes the fun things that keep you connected as a unit!

So please, take that decrepid image of "NUN" out of your head and replace it with the reality of living a life devoted to following God's will! I'll tell you, from what I have experienced from a number of the older sisters in the community, it's well worth it!

So, religious sisters sitting alone all day praying is BUSTED by Faith-Busters! In place I wish to leave you all with this image, the image of the family. Living in a convent is much like living in a family . . . you have your responsibilities within the household: your nights to cook dinner, your chores, your days to lead prayers, etc. But along with those responsibilities also comes the fun things that keep you connected as a unit!
I would really encourage you to go to her blog at <a to a workshop on writing your spiritual autobiography. I have begun it. I think if I gave it a title, I would call it "Conversion stories." As I look back on my life, I realize how close God has been to me and has helped me grow spiritually through these different conversions. When I speak of conversions, I am not speaking of from one religion to another, but of spiritual conversions which bring me close to God. Perhaps in time, I will share some of these conversion snippets with you.

I am not sure who would read this autobiography when I finish or if anyone would be interested, but something in me tells me I have to write it, and perhaps I can share some of the stories here. And perhaps you, dear reader, would like to share some of your own.

By the way, the picture above is not of me. That is St. Therese de Lisieux who is my patroness and type='text'>Our New Candidates

Our candidates have arrived. One is Sara and the other is Simona. I like to introduce them to you one at a time. Simona is from Romania. The following is an excerpt of an interview with Simona taken from our Community News.

"After a long journey that took me across two oceans and involvement in different ministries, one beautiful October day in 2007, I met Sr. Betsy Goodwin in Boston through a common passion of working toward the eradiction of human trafficking. That was the beginning of a simple, quiet, and gentle relationship that little-by-little developed into a more profound relationship with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. After one year of working with Sr. Betsy, I came to the motherhouse for a Mini-Sabbath, where from the hill coming up to the Glen, I fell in love with and was mesmerized by the beauty, simplicity, and serenity of the place. When I first stepped into the motherhouse, I knew that something more powerful, gracefilled, and peaceful took over my whole being. I knew from tht moment that this is the place where I belong and want to be for the rest of my life.

What I am most impressed with and love about the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia is their love for one another and their love for all creation, their faithfulness and continuous presence to each other and to those whom they serve, their honesty and mutual support, and their tremendous witness and inspiration-not so much by words and deeds but rather by their being and continuous dedication and passion for the love of God and his Living Word. It seems to me that no matter the sister' ages, professional backgrounds, roles, and country of origin, they seem so much inflamed with the love and gratitude of and for God, the Gospel, people, creation, and all that sustains and surrounds us here on Earth and even beyond.
<img width='1' height='1' Now, I would like to write about history in the making. St. Clare's feast day is August 11. St. Clare was the first female Franciscan. She was an attentive listener and follower of St. Francis. She felt a call by God to join the Franciscan followers of St. Francis, although, all of them were men at that time. She took the leap in faith and joined them. Although, she could not live with them, she herself soon had followers. The friars gave them San Damiano Convent where the Poor Clares still live.

Sarah, another prospective candidate to our congregation,
posing with Sister Marie O'Connor

<><>
<> </>
</></>
Simone, a prospective candidate toour congregation
<><>

</></>

Traditionally, in our congregation, we have made our vows on the feast of St. Clare. of Sisters who often left their countries to come to the United States in obedience to Jesus' command to "Go and teach all nations." They came. What you see here is a musical instrument for them to teach their students, but also to brighten their own days in this strange land. The shoes were made from corn husks. They used what they found for their daily needs.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I have been a sober member of AA for 12 years and Father Keating's interpretation provides an invaluable roadmap for the transformation from self-centeredness, which he says all of us are, to god-centeredness. There is so much in this book regarding the pain of addiction, which he says all of us are addicted, and how to move from addiction using the 12 Steps, that every time I open this book, I grow calm with the knowledge that God can direct my thinking. Having spent most of my life driven by 100 forms of fear, this book specifically discusses what it is and how to resolve it. There is so much practical information, that its probable that this book would resolve issues for anyone that picks it up." As a counselor and spiritual director, I highly recommend this book. It is a good book for anyone who is taking the spiritual journey seriously. This magnificent book is available for you just a click away through amazon.com. Don't continue with the personal pains of your addiction. Get your copy right now.

The Women & Spirit Exhibit

On Saturday, March 13, about 30 of our Sisters took a bus trip to Washington, D.C. for the Women and Spirit Exhibit to see the history of religious life in the United States. It was truly fascinating and I would like to share some pictures with you.

This is what we saw as we entered the exhibit. You can see different Sisters engaged in different activities during different generations. You cannot see the writing too well, but what it says is: "Women &Spirit: Discover a world few have seen, but millions have shared." These words are so true. As we all go through our spiritual journeys in life, many Sisters have accompanied us, whether it be in the classroom, in a hospital bed, an orphanage, a parish, or in prayer ministries. A movie that played and I did not get a picture talked about Sisters and 90 plus orphans who were caught in a hurricane in Galveston, Texas. Their orphanage was right on the beach. The Sisters did all they could to save the orphans and lost their lives trying. Only 3 boys survived. Many others in the city had died in that hurricane also.

<div class="separator" sizcache="15" sizset="2" style="border-bottom: medium none; Let me explain what she has to do with our own congregation, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Our congregation was founded by a Mother Frances Bachmann, a widow with small children at the time of our founding. We were originally under the Bishop of Philadelphia. Soon the Bishops of Buffalo, and Syracuse asked Mother Frances for Sisters to help in their respective dioceses. Mother Frances sent Sisters. Because we were under the Bishop and not the Pope, the Bishops of those two New York dioceses said the Sisters were now under them and no longer a part of our community, which was a heartbreak to Mother Frances and all the Sisters following her. Marianne Cope was part of the Syracuse group, but many of us consider ourselves related and we hope to all be one again some day.

Sister Marianne Cope was Superior General of the Syracuse Franciscans and volunteered to work with Father Damian in Hawaii giving nursing care to the lepers there when she was still in office. She is well remembered in Hawaii even to this day. She has since been called "blessed" by the Catholic Church, and all of her Sisters hope to see her declared a canonized saint someday soon.

<a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mother_Marianne_Cope.jpg" rel="nofollow" sizcache="15" sizset="0" style="margin-left: 1em;

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hvBANhR2RQY/S557FpFsEBI/AAAAAAAAAHU/Muz4JCt_VGE/s1600-h/DSC00024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; I believe this is the old habit of the Holy Cross Sisters. Above, you can see how it looked in the front. Below, you can see it from the back along with the machine that helped to put the creases in it. The exhibit also gave the story of the habits. Many times these were the dress of the poor whom the Sisters ministered to in Europe centuries before, but the habit did not change with the times nor the geography, so they looked out of place when they came to America. As times changed, the habit became a symbol of being a Sister or nun. So, congregations such as ours designed a habit that looked like a "Sister." To the then modern 19th and 20th century Sister, the habit was a symbol of their vow of poverty. They had no other clothes besides the habit, and basically had a Sunday habit, a work habit, and a cleaning habit. They had no other clothes except a shawl to keep them warm in the winter.

The exhibit also distinguished between the term "Sister" and "nun." Technically a "nun" is a Catholic religious woman who lives in the cloistered. Their main work is prayer and they may do other things such as farming, sewing, making altar breads, or other means to help support themselves. The "Sister" is a Catholic religious woman who is engaged in active ministries outside of the confines of the convent. Modern day usage usually interchanges these two words without distinction.

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; "Open the Door" is a great book for Joyce Rupp fans. This book can help you dig deeper as you go on your spiritual journey. As one reviewer said of her book, "Her questions are keys to opening doors that may be stuck, may be difficult to open, doors that are hidden or avoided. For if you want to engage in a six week process that invites you to explore your inner worlds, this book is a must." I invite you to try it.

Finding Christ

Here is an inspiring video you can watch for the rest of Lent during your Christian spiritual journey. The description is taken from Amazon.com

"This four-part series examines the sprititual journeys of four individuals. In Part 2, David Woodring hit rock bottom, dealing with guns, drugs, and violence, while his parents prayed for deliverance. In Part 3, Cora Goldman was abused as a child, conceived a child through rape, and lost a child who was burned alive before she was delivered from Satans grasp and her involvement in Spiritualism. In Part 4, Nick Jimenez walked for 13 days from Mexico to the U.S. looking for work but found only troubles, until a person whom he hated asked him to go to church. <iframe align="left" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=corazonalimen&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B000HLDDB0&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align: left; You will find a delightful surprise in The Alchemist. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelhos charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.

"The Alchemist" in its twenty-second year as a best seller has found its way to the four corners of the world, and to me. I read this about two years and have just reread it as we enter the decade of the 2010s. It is a good read at the beginning of any new year.

Who would you like to inspire?

<div class="zemanta-pixie" style="height: 15px; I have four aspects (or maybe more, but whose counting) to my ministry. I am a licensed mental health counselor. I see everyone from age 2 to 92. I see couples, children, adults, teenagers. In the past seven years, I have been deeply touched by the stories people have entrusted to my care. I have also been deeply touched that God has used me as an instrument of much healing. I have seen children who have been sexually abused come in afraid and leave as self-confident persons, to be very successful later on in life. I have seen teenagers on the verge of joining gangs and changing to more positive directions in their lives. I have seen depressed people drag themselves in and leave with their heads held high, and feeling good about themselves. I have seen anxious people, tranquil after therapy. A second aspect of my ministry is drug and alcohol counseling. I marvel at those who have taken the tough road from addictions to being drug free and sober, having faced their own demons and come out of it a better person. A third aspect of my ministry is spiritual direction. Many people do not know what spiritual direction is. It is when one person, the director, sits with another and tries to discern God's presence in their lives. To see the spiritual growth in others is truly a magnificent gift. The fourth aspect of my ministry is the parenting program or the Nurtured Heart Approach. This was originally started for parents of children with ADHD, but has been found to work with all children. Another aspect of that is to bring it into the schools.

I have a wonderful staff who works with me on these projects with amazing results. I am so fortunate to have them.

We have worked exclusively with poor people of all races and nationalities. Our funding has been cut, so we are trying to sell some of our products. For example, we made a DVD, 2 CDs, and a couple of e-books, and are working on some more. If you want more information, let me know by writing to me at corazonalimentado@hotmail.com

If you think this is a good ministry and you would like to donate, please go to the church's website at http://www.stpaulchurchde.org/ and click donations at the bottom and specify that it is for the counseling department. Every little bit helps. In advance, I ask God to bless you for your generosity in helping especially the children. Well, that is a very brief summary of what I do. Please do not hesitate to write me your thoughts.

<img alt="Reblog this post [with Zemanta]" class="zemanta-pixie-img" src="http://img.zemanta.com/reblog_b.png?x-id=123745e4-bf0f-4a50-9f4a-e427f8b507ef" style="border-bottom: medium none; So, he reasoned, all of creation is our brother and sister. Hence, the title of the movie Brother Sun, and Sister Moon. If the earth is our sister, then it makes sense to take care of our sister earth. Recycling is one way of doing that. I recycle here and it helps the environment as well as helps our poor parish mission which I serve. I send the recycled items to Recyling Fundraiser. When I was a kid, we had diaries, which we had a key to, locked up, and hid so our brothers and sisters could not read it. Now we blog. I have discovered an amazing thing. Nobody reads it unless you have what they call SEOs which I know nothing about. I don't even need a key or even try to hide it. It is my own personal diary which someone may or may not discover.

Well, first I would like to introduce myself. I am a Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Many young people ask me what led me to that decision. The simple answer is I fell in love with God and felt God was calling me to a Sister. I remember my aunt who was a Christian Charity Sister saying to me "You will know" when I asked her how do you know if God is calling you to be a Sister. I have to tell you that was a very unsatisfying answer when I was a young teenager. But she was right. I did know. Oh sure, it was a process and I had my doubts on and off, but in the end I was pretty sure God was calling me to be a Sister. I have had no regrets. It has been a marvelous opportunity for me to pray a lot and explore ways to get closer to God, and God is so willing to help. That is the really neat part about it. In some ways, I can identify with Imaculée in Left to Tell. Unlike her, I was never terrorized by death threats, but there were interior struggles where I would rather do my own thing rather than listen to God. Also, reading her story makes me realize my biggest struggles are the interior ones. For those of you, who do not know who Imaculée is, she was a young woman in Ruanda who had escaped the death mobs who were trying to kill everybody in her tribe. They came very close to succeeding on a number of occasions, but Imaculée fought within herself her own feelings of hatred and a desire for revenge by praying, and maintaining her faith in God's love for her to be able to survive. It is a magnificent story. I could not put it down. My heart was racing as I read it. Once she believed God was calling her to do something, she kept the vision before her, no matter what the discouraging and frustrating circumstances were.

Well, dear diary, it has been a long day and I am ready to retire. I know my secrets are safe with you.
